Teapots have been around for centuries and are in most everyone’s home in one shape or another. Today vintage teapots have become a collector’s item with some having significant value while others are just a nice addition to a collection or display at home or for sale in a booth at a vintage or antique mall.
Many people think the origin of teapots was in England, however, historical records show the teapots dating back to the 1500s were created in China. They were not originally intended for serving hot tea; they were used to serve wine and water. Some of the first teapots were part of the Ming Dynasty.
In the late 1600s, teapots entered England via an East India company. These teapots had advanced to having strainers to keep tea leaves from falling into a cup. The base of a teapot is larger than the rest of the piece so that tea has room to heat as it moves and the aromas and flavors come out.
Prices of vintage teapots can run from $15.00 into the hundreds of dollars. Most found today are between $25.00-$150.00. The vintage M&M blue teapot above is selling at between $85.00-$125.00.

Copper teapots are popular for those collecting copper housewares and range from $20.00-$200.00 depending on the style, size, condition and age.
Asian teapots are frequently more valuable than others. The age, intricacy, shape and details create the value, particularly for collectors.
Teapots can be found in antique stores, vintage and collectible shops, and thrift stores. When considering a purchase, check to be sure the lid is included, the spout and handle have not been broken and glued and there are no stains within the container. For bone China teapots or very detailed pieces, check that there are no chips or chunks missing and no cracks.
Vintage teapots make great collectibles and look cute in display cabinets or on shelves. They certainly make tea time fun!
