Begin the treasure hunt - lampsBy treasure, we mean vintage items or antiques. They are in plain sight as well as hidden. A big part of the fun of being in the world of vintage is looking for and finding amazing treasures. Let’s get started! An obvious place to start your treasure hunt is in your own home. Do you have some of grandma’s things just stored in the garage, basement, shed, attic or extra closet? Take them out, look them over and check any markings on the bottom. Do an online search to see if you can find the item, learn about it and find out what the current price is for it.

Next, talk to family members and close friends. They, too, probably have the “granny” things stored somewhere and don’t care about them, they just ended up with them. Not everyone feels sentimental about things they perceive to be “old-fashioned and outdated.” That doesn’t mean they aren’t valuable on the market or in a collection. You can make that happen!

The most obvious treasures await at thrift stores

An obvious treasure hunt location is at local thrift stores. Endless times we have found valuable pieces in great shape worth a considerable amount. You have to look carefully at each item to be sure no chips, breaks or damage.

Consignment stores can also present some opportunities. While they are more expensive, typically, than a thrift store, unusual things can be found.

Yard sales are golden as many very valuable items are found at these sales for pennies on the dollar. Sellers will often drop the price significantly just to move the items out of their garages or homes.blog1-compressor

Flea markets are notorious for finding rare pieces. You just have to dig deep to find them and when you do, bingo! Most vendors at flea markets will bargain on the pricing, too.

Many cities hold vintage fairs or festivals from time to time. While prices tend to be a little higher, there are some amazing finds at these events.

Driving out of your immediate city to nearby towns can also present some vintage shopping opportunities. Small or rural towns often have antique, vintage or thrift markets for browsing and fun finds. Even more fun, a weekend getaway to an area known for their vintage and antique stores. Mix in some dining, wine tasting, and local adventures with your shopping and create a lasting memory.
