Ask Vintage Decor Buddies
Here are some answers to some of our more frequently asked questions:
Antiques are classified as items over 100 years old and typically have a higher value (bigger price tag) than vintage pieces. Vintage is typically at least 20 years old and can be found for reasonable cost for adding to any decor.
You’ll find the trends change over the years, however, some are steadfast or have returned now such as:
- Vintage clothing – young people are enamored with trends from the 80s and 90s. Vintage jeans, purses, jewelry and dresses are quite popular.
- Salt and pepper shakers – everyone loves S&P shakers! They are affordable, cute, easily transported and make ideal additions to any kitchen or collection as well as fun gifts.
- Roosters – roosters have made a comeback from the 90s. Everyone had at least one ceramic or porcelain rooster in their kitchens in the 90s. While that trend faded for a couple decades, it is back. Roosters are believed to bring good luck and with a huge range of styles, choices, sizes and designs, they make a fun addition to any home.
- Cookie jars – cookie jars date back hundreds of years and are popular today. Everyone needs a container to store cookies, why not a vintage design that adds an element of style to the kitchen? Learn more about cookie jars in our Cookie Jar Drive blog post.
- Asian – Asian designs are beautiful and add an element of elegance to any décor. Vases, figurines, dishes, and wall art dress up any room or office. Add a large Asian fan behind a tall vase with bamboo and the placement area will pop.
- Vintage animals – made of ceramic or porcelain, vintage animals such as elephants, dogs, cats, cows, monkeys and birds are popular. You will find some from the 50s and 60s that add a fun element to décor or collections and have some value. Elephants are very popular as they are believed by many to bring good luck. Vintage Foo dogs are not easy to find and usually have a hefty price tag, however, they are wildly sought after by collectors and designers.
- 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s items and clothing
- Art deco- mid-century designs
- Post-modernism
- Punk
- French-country
- Shabby chic
- Industrial
- Borderline antique
It looks good if you like it! It is totally a matter of taste when it comes to adding a touch or two of vintage or completely decorating using vintage décor to a home.
It depends on what you find attractive in your home. Some people add just a few things throughout their homes, others create an entirely nostalgic feel using many types of vintage items. We recommend you start by just adding one or two pieces to your kitchen and family room and see if you like them. If it feels right, look for some complementary pieces to add in other areas carrying the vintage theme throughout your home.
