Part of the fun in the world of vintage is the hunt and find. Visiting thrift stores, antique shops, vintage businesses, yard sales and estate sales and finding something unique that you won’t find anywhere else is a thrill.  Adding an unusual vintage decor piece is fun and becomes a great conversational piece.

We have found many unusual – sometimes odd – things in our continuous vintage décor searches.  Some are valuable, some are not.  Even the ones that are worth less than $100 can be a great addition to home décor or a booth.

This vintage wine bottle opener is very ornate standing about 16 inches tall with a carved handle and cherry wood base.  The bottle is placed on top of the bottom on the base, the handle is pushed down and removes the cork.  It is a beautiful addition to a bar.

This unusual and kind of weird clown sculpture is holding cymbals and has a face built in at the base of his back.  It is vintage art and value is placed at around $70.

How about some tea in this gigantic teapot?  Ok, maybe not but a plant would look beautiful. It is quite heavy pottery, about 18 inches wide and 12 inches tall.  We found this teapot at a thrift store for $3.99.  It is very colorful and cute.  We put it in our booth and it was gone within a few days.

The fish you see here is very heavy, about 11 inches long and carved with some gold dust sprinkled on it.  Solid wood, quite detailed and cute.  Worth about $60.00.

Now here is an unusual piece of art.  It’s called “Kiss my Ass” and was created by Robert Deyber, who used euphemisms and cliches in his art.  Note the lipstick “kiss” on the donkey’s cheek.  This artist has painted many pictures, several of which have donkeys or other animals as the focal points.  He passed away in 2021 but his art is quite popular today and some pieces range from $250-$500.

Isn’t this a beautiful piece of art?  At first glance, one might think it is gaudy.  However, it consists of live orchids and ferns dipped in 24K gold from Maui and carefully arranged on black velvet into a delicate design.  The ornate frame reflects the beauty of this old Hawaiian art handcrafted by Saburo, Inc. on the island of Maui. This was found at a thrift store for $9.99 and worth around $150.  Also, there is a certificate on the back of the art.

Don’t underestimate the potential or value of odd or unusual vintage décor pieces in your treasure hunt travels.  What one might consider weird or unattractive, another might see the beauty of an item based on its history and story.
